This symposium brings together PGRs & ECRs from diverse disciplines researching contemporary Spain and its communities.

Hispanists across the world will have observed that the last few decades have been a period of intensified social, political, and cultural change in Spanish society. In recent years the discipline of Spanish studies has opened up, following a constantly evolving country where there has recently been four general elections in as many years, a burgeoning feminist movement, a growing cinematic culture, powerful movements for separatism and the divisive issue of how to approach the country’s violent past. Undoubtedly, the landscape of Spain has been profoundly affected by its equally volatile history. The last 100 years have witnessed the dissolution and restoration of a monarchy, the birth of a republic, an iconic Civil War and two dictatorships. Such characteristics make Spain a fascinating area of research.

This symposium showcases the work of postgraduate and Early Career Researchers from all disciplines, including, but not limited to, History, Literature, Film and Visual Cultures, Politics, Social Sciences and Modern Languages.

The event is organised by Rachel Beaney (AHRC: Cardiff University), Joe Healy (ESRC: Cardiff University) and Tom Wardle (AHRC: University of Southampton).

The keynote speakers are Dr Fraser Raeburn (University of Sheffield) and Dr Caroline Gray (Aston University).
