Bitcoin Under the Microscope

CARBS Business Breakfast, 26 January 2021

The Invention of Bitcoin in 2009 is one of the most influential financial innovations in recent history. As opposed to traditional financial systems, Bitcoin works without any centralised authority, offering a type of transparency and a new level of data availability that has never existed before.

The rich network data of Bitcoin is significantly underutilised in many areas of research, trading, regulation, anti-money laundering and terrorist activity prevention, however. This is mainly due to bitcoin data not being very accessible beyond those who can mine it. The ability to make it more easily understandable and in a useable and organised format, is therefore highly desirable.

In this session, Dr. Jahanshahloo will briefly discuss Bitcoin, why it came to be, and how it works. Then he will introduce CUBiD (Cardiff University Bitcoin Database) – the only structured database that allows everyone to benefit from the Bitcoin data without requiring advanced level of IT skills. Finally, he will present some of CUBiD’s applications in areas such as anti-money laundering, terrorist activity prevention, tax avoidance, trading, financial regulation and oversight, research, and teaching, helping organisations to see how CUBiD could be of use to them.
