“For the economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis to be durable and resilient, a return to ‘business as usual’…must be avoided” (OECD 2020).

If nothing else, 2020 has taught us that life is unpredictable. The question that is increasingly being asked is how we begin to build resilience in our communities to help address future shocks. What is clear is that more of the same isn’t necessarily the way to go…

This Breakfast Briefing will offer employers a chance to consider options for building business resilience, supporting the community and ultimately building a better Wales. The session is intended to offer a range of practical solutions to moving away from business as usual and beginning to develop a sustainable response. The session will include speakers on the topics of Living Wage places (https://www.cardiff.gov.uk/ENG/Your-Council/Strategies-plans-and-policies/Living-Wage/cardiff-living-wage-city/Pages/default.aspx); the Community Jobs Compact (https://www.cynnalcymru.com/launch-of-the-community-jobs-compact/) and Payroll Savings & Loans Schemes (www.cardiffcu.com/payroll-schemes.php). Each scheme supports the local economy in different ways, but importantly each scheme is a steppingstone to building back better.

The session will be underpinned with both practical experience and research understanding. For each scheme, employers who have already signed up will talk the audience through their experiences and highlight the benefits for all. There will also be an opportunity to hear from employees about what these schemes mean to them. Finally, the session will also offer the audience the opportunity to ask questions about how these schemes might work for them, share experiences and help take the next step in working toward a sustainable Wales.
