Grange Pavillion

Mhairi McVicar and Community Gateway

In 2012, eight Cardiff University staff members proposed making a commitment to develop a long-term partnership with a geographically based local community, emphasizing the need for, as one resident termed it, ‘a relationship and not an affair’. Piloting in Grangetown, Cardiff’s biggest and Wales’ most ethnically diverse electoral ward, the Community Gateway partnership platform began with an open call to individuals and organisations throughout Grangetown and Cardiff University for all ideas for community - university collaborations. 245 expressions of interest have launched 60 projects, bringing 19 Cardiff University schools together with over 30 third sector partners and achieving over £2 million investment in Grangetown. From the Grangetown Business Forum and Grangetown World Street Market, to Philosophy Cafes, Somali Community research partnerships, Mental and Physical Health networks, and Career, Role model and Academic Mentoring initiatives, partnerships facilitated through Community Gateway have emphasized co-produced research, teaching and volunteering with a focus on tangible, long term and mutual benefit. As our first partnership project, the Grange Pavilion’s launch in Autumn 2020 as a community-owned redevelopment of a former Bowls Pavilion represents our first eight years of partnership working and is at the heart of ongoing community-university collaboration in Grangetown.

This webinar will share our learnings from our first eight years and invite expressions of interest for ongoing research, teaching and volunteering collaborations with our partners in Grangetown.
