Fuels for the future

The Energy Systems Research Institute was open between 2015 and 2021. This page shows the Institute’s past work. It is not monitored or updated.

We seek to expand our knowledge on topics such as wind and solar energy, high-voltage direct current (HVDC), CCS technologies, smart grids, and integrated energy systems to name but a few. In so doing, we are able to provide expertise to industry and policymakers as well as academics.

Energy policy has to balance the needs and consequences of maintaining security of supply, ensuring affordability and minimising environmental impact. Our research is interested in how we develop the fuels and infrastructure needed to provide energy in ways which are sustainable in every sense.

Specific topics include:

  • smart grid
  • energy infrastructure
  • power electronics and direct high-voltage current (HVDC)
  • the earth science of hydrocarbons
  • CCS technologies
  • energy storage
  • modelling and simulation of energy supply.

We are a key contributor to a number of major research projects and have a wide range of national and international links with the industry and academia.

These links allow us to work in partnership with key stakeholders in the energy sector to develop our research portfolio and areas of work in line with industrial and legislative priorities, requirements, and policy.
