The Energy Systems Research Institute was open between 2015 and 2021. This page shows the Institute’s past work. It is not monitored or updated.

We undertake research on energy and environmental conditions in the built environment, from individual components, through to whole buildings, and to urban and municipality scales.

We seek to encourage individual and interdisciplinary team-based research, with clear agenda setting and high impact for sustainability and resilience in relation to current issues in the built environment, and in response to the needs of government, industry, and society.

Our research is closely linked to international and national targets for carbon emission reduction through a system approach which includes reducing energy demand, renewable energy supply and energy storage, to provide healthy, comfortable, and productive environments for people.

Specific research topics include:

• development of computer models for energy and environmental prediction
• building, energy, and environmental monitoring
• health outcomes from using buildings
• urban-scale energy and environmental planning and design
• low carbon energy and urban transitions.

Much of our work is design-based research which is carried out within the built environment using real building design and operation as research subjects.
