Field work in Switzerland
The Valais region of Switzerland has spectacular landscapes shaped by ice, water and sediment movement.
In this optional field course, our third-year geography students have the opportunity to get up close to active glaciers, observe deep gorges carved by debris flows, and explore how water is intensively managed for hydropower, irrigation and consumption.
In the past, our geography students investigated how glacial history has shaped the geomorphology, biogeochemistry, and ecology of the region, and evaluated the management of local resources and hazards. They also explored the region from above, on the ground, and even below, in a truly immersive geographical experience.
This field course provides advanced training in field geographical research skills, enabling students to apply previously taught field skills, knowledge and techniques to complex research-based problems.
