Trosolwg y cwrs

The four-year degree in Business Management with German combines the main elements (modules and teaching) of the business management programme with the study of German language and culture.

The first year provides the core building blocks of management and business subjects, together with one module in German.

Year two develops from this base, giving equal weighting to the business and language subjects. You will continue to focus on core Business Management modules, whilst the language component concentrates on expression, translation and business language, providing the ideal preparation for the third year which is spent abroad. Here, you will be taught level two Business Management in German.

In your fourth year (having returned to Cardiff) the business and management content of the degree will be extended with three core and three optional modules, together with one module which maintains the language input.

German is the native language of nearly one hundred million people. To speak German is to be part of a crucially important political, economic and cultural world. A recent survey by the UK's leading employers' organisation, the CBI, rated German as the language most valued by UK managers. Germany is considered to be the lynchpin of the European Union, making knowledge of the language as important in Brussels as in Berlin.

You will develop high-level language skills with the aim of achieving near-native competency along with in-depth knowledge of aspects of the culture, history, politics and society of Germany. You will spend your third year in a German-speaking country, practising and developing your language skills. We offer German for both advanced students and beginners.

Overall, the degree of Business Management with German prepares you for a career in international business with an ability to work in German as well as in English.

The third year is spent studying business related modules in one of our partner universities in Germany before returning to complete the final year in Cardiff.

Mae'r modiwlau a ddangosir yn esiampl o'r cwricwlwm arferol. Byddant yn cael eu hadolygu cyn blwyddyn academaidd 2020/21. Bydd y modiwlau terfynol yn cael eu cyhoeddi erbyn mis Medi 2020

Blwyddyn tri: Blwyddyn Ryngosod

Year three consists of one year's study at a university in Germany as part of your degree. The programme of study is subject to approval by the Business School and will be equivalent to 6 double or 12 single Cardiff Business School modules (120 credits). It will consist of modules in business, management, economics, accounting etc., taught and assessed in German. This provides a competency in the language within a framework of business, accounting, and economics specialisations.

We have developed links with several universities or equivalent institutions in France, Spain, Switzerland and Germany. It is intended that the size of each group from the Business School at any host institution will be two to four students. Students studying in Europe as part of their degree programme may be eligible for a grant from the Erasmus scheme, operated by the British Council.

We have international partnership agreements with high ranking institutions in Europe and currently have bi-lateral exchange agreements with:

  • Mannheim University
  • Konstanz University
  • Tu Munich

In your fourth year (having returned to Cardiff) the business and management content of the degree will be extended with two core modules and a selection of optional modules. Another core double module maintains the language input.

Mae'r Brifysgol wedi ymrwymo i ddarparu amrywiaeth eang o opsiynau modiwl lle’n bosibl. Ond byddwch yn ymwybodol er y byddwn yn gwneud pob ymdrech i gynnig dewis, gall hyn gael ei gyfyngu mewn rhai amgylchiadau. Y rheswm am hyn yw'r ffaith mai dim ond nifer cyfyngedig o leoedd sydd ar gael ar rai modiwlau, a gaiff eu dyrannu ar sail y cyntaf i'r felin. Mae'n ofynnol i fodiwlau eraill sicrhau isafswm nifer o fyfyrwyr cyn gallu eu cynnal, er mwyn gwneud yn siŵr y gellir cyflwyno addysg o ansawdd priodol. Gall modiwlau gael eu cyfyngu oherwydd gwrthdaro yn yr amserlen hefyd, ac er bod y Brifysgol yn ymdrechu i amharu cyn lleied â phosibl ar eich dewis, byddai'n syniad da i chi ofyn am gyngor gan yr Ysgol berthnasol am y dewisiadau modiwl sydd ar gael.

Sut caf fy addysgu?

Our teaching is heavily informed by research and combines academic rigour with practical relevance. While our internationally recognised faculty consists of academics who are at the forefront of knowledge within their field. They bring the lessons learned from their most recent research into the classroom, giving you access to critical business thinking and contemporary real life examples and scenarios.

We will provide your teaching and learning resources, and will be responsive to your needs and views. For your part, you will need to put in the necessary amount of work both during and outside formal teaching sessions, and make good use of the facilities provided.

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

Lectures provide an overview of the key concepts and frameworks for a topic, equipping you to carry out independent research for the seminars and to develop your own ideas. Seminars provide an opportunity for you to explore the ideas outlined in the lectures. Seminars may take various formats, including plenary group discussion, small-group work and student-led presentations.

Sut y caf fy nghefnogi?

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutor three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Undergraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

You will have access through the Learning Central website to relevant multimedia material, presentations, lecture handouts, bibliographies, further links, electronic exercises and discussion circles.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback following each examination period and will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

Sut caf fy asesu?

A range of assessment methods are used, including essays, examinations, presentations, portfolios, creative assignments and individual or group projects.

Essays and examinations are used not only for assessment purposes but also as a means of developing your capacities to gather, organise, evaluate and deploy relevant information and ideas from a variety of sources in reasoned arguments. Dedicated essay workshops and individual advice enable you to produce your best work, and written feedback on essays feeds forward into future work, enabling you to develop your strengths and address any weaker areas.
