Zoom Cymru is a registered charity which works across Wales providing self-development opportunities for young people through engagement with film and digital media. Their programmes offer opportunities for young people to gain skills and experience to help them access their life chances.
Film enables young people to convey their feelings, represent their views and participate in decision making. For many, participation with Zoom’s activities develops a broad range of life skills, transferable to education or employment; whilst some of our programmes are vocationally focused designed to stimulate progression into the creative industries.
Our programmes operate in deprived communities in Wales, working with partner organisations from the not-for-profit sector.
Activities
With funding received from the Heritage Lottery fund, zoom Cymru will work with young people from Bishop Hedley School who will lead a project which explores the reasons for, and impacts of migration from Catholic communities to Merthyr Tydfil. Through creative media and using established heritage techniques (archiving, oral-history, community consultations) the project will explore the reasons for Catholic migration from a range of countries to Merthyr, illustrated through the changing pupil-base within the school.
Through engagement with community members, studies of archives and observations of local customs, events, businesses and traditions a range of digital content will be produced exploring why migrant Catholic communities came to Merthyr, why they stayed and how they influenced the local environment.
The final film will be produced by the young people and will archived in a number of collections, along with shown at community events to tell the positive story of Catholic migration in Merthyr Tydfil
Young people will be supported in developing heritage skills and understanding (such as oral history and archiving) by staff from Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Gallery. The charity Zoom Cymru will support the young people with personal development and gain a recognised ASDAN accreditation.
