Film Hub Wales

A four year project led by Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. 

They form part of the ‘Film Audience Network’, a UK wide initiative funded by the British Film Institute. Their central aim is to increase access for audiences to a range of British independent and world cinema through screenings and events but also to support the Welsh exhibition sector through research, training and audience development project support.

Activities

Film Hub Wales commissioned Bigger Picture Research to examine the current and potential use of archive film by exhibitors in Wales, to inform development of support initiatives for screen heritage in 2015. The research (which is at draft stage) explores the supply of, and demand for, screen heritage programming, mapping audiences, opportunities and barriers to engagement.

They have commissioned a Wales specific programme of 5 x themed archive packages in partnership with the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales that have attached tool kits/resources which a) focus on the Welsh Baccalaureate and b) suggest programme options and tips for exhibitors,

They are also supporting a cross hub project between Film Hub North West Central exploring regional archive seasons, events and packages with activities for rural audiences across Mid Wales and the North of England. Flicks in the Sticks will help communities to discover memories through film, uncovering local films and screening them in in village halls with online activities.

A Wales and UK wide programme of activity for ‘Britain on Film’ – all 9 Hubs will participate in a three year urban, coastal and rural themed programme which celebrated the digitisation of 10,000 titles from across UK archives. Wales will see local village fete/workmen’s halls, alongside larger special events for national impact (such as working with CADW).

Digitalisation of one or more Welsh language features as part of Unlocking Film Heritage in partnership with the National Screen and Sound Archive and S4C. Following this, we will continue to work closely will all parties to promote responsible bookings from S4C.

They also offer screening days encouraging members to view Welsh film previews and archive films where the choices and supported by a rolling modest fund, taking the risk out of programming.

They offer support strands for their members (exhibitors) who may wish to screen Welsh film as part of the project.
