We are very proud of our student community and are committed to helping you enjoy your time in Cardiff.
Our student-staff panel is a great opportunity for our students to play an active role in the life of the School. New academic reps are elected each year.
This student-run society does a great job of bringing students from all across the School of Social Sciences together for social events, bake sales, and the annual SOCSI Ball. The Society also runs the busy and successful SOCSI netball and football teams. They place a particular focus on welcoming new students and helping them make the most of their time in Cardiff.
State of the Campus
For a number of years the School has run the ‘State of the Campus’ research project in the first week of term for returning second year students.
This annual week of activity, supported by Citizens Cymru, sees students undertake primary research on issues that affect them and begin to campaign for change. For example, the 2016 campaign focussed on the quality of student housing, safety and security, and relationships with letting agents.
It’s a great opportunity to ‘learn through doing’,with students presenting their findings at a Citizen Assembly to an audience of University staff, fellow students, and external stakeholders.
Cardiff Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (CUROP)
CUROP provides summer placement opportunities that allow undergraduates to gain research experience and contribute to exciting research projects. Previous CUROP placements have included opportunities to work on projects exploring public health approaches to preventing sexual abuse, understanding how young people use schools as sites for self-harm, analysing how children understand and experience rural faith schooling, and the public engagement of under 25 year olds in urban governance.
Global Opportunities have links to over 300 institutions around the world, supporting students who are considering, or currently spending, a period of time abroad on a study or work placement, or who are interested in taking part in a short-term programme including study, work and volunteering opportunities.
