Our research is having an impact in fields as diverse as biodiversity and design and manufacturing. We collaborate with over 100 international companies, including some of the world’s leading industrialists, demonstrating the quality of our expertise. We scored a GPA of 3.04 and are ranked 25th in the UK. A distinctive feature of this unit is that 60% of our research has been deemed ‘outstanding’ for its impact in terms of its reach and significance.

Research in the School of Computer Science & Informatics seeks to solve challenging computational problems in the areas of distributed and scientific computing, informatics, and visual computing.
Much of our research is multidisciplinary and impacts areas as diverse as healthcare, mobile communications and the environment.
Since 2008 our research has continued to thrive with the School's average research income per annum increasing by 41% to £1.73M. Other notable achievements during this period include the generation of a significant portfolio of projects in areas of mobile and social computing and the establishment of the One Wales Research Institute of Visual Computing.
Strategic collaborations have also strengthened over the REF period with our staff engaged in collaborations with nearly 100 UK and international academic partners. We also work with industrial partners worldwide including IBM, Airbus and Ford.
Direct access and support from the University's multi-million pound Advanced Research Computing facility (ARCCA) delivers capability for data analysis, large-scale simulations and storage and visualisation. In addition to this our Human Factors Technology Research Centre houses a variety of motion capture systems currently used in research into assisting creative engineering design and a state of the art 3D video system to support our innovative facial analysis projects.
