Dr. Savyasaachi Jain is a Senior Lecturer in JOMEC, specialising in journalism and documentary. His specific areas of interest encompass international journalism, global media systems, and the influences that shape journalistic practices and standards. These research interests align closely with his practitioner experience of the media’s coverage of politics, elections, terrorism, conflict, migration, the environment and health in countries across Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

He brings to his teaching extensive international experience as a print and television journalist, documentary filmmaker and journalism trainer. He has conducted workshops for professional journalists in more than 18 countries on behalf of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development, Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, UNDP, UNESCO and UNICEF. As Asia Projects Coordinator for The Thomson Foundation, he initiated and led large international media development projects and supervised more than 50 international documentary co-productions.

He earlier taught at Swansea University, where he was the Programme Director for the Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme in Journalism, Media and Globalisation (War and Conflict Specialism).

His PhD, from the University of Westminster in London, examined how the analytical reach of media systems theory could be extended to take into account the complex reality of non-Western media systems.
