Ymchwil
Diddordebau ymchwil
Mae fy niddordebau ymchwil ar wahanol adegau wedi canolbwyntio ar cosmoleg, strwythur ar raddfa fawr, theori maes clasurol a thorri cymesuredd. Am ran dda o'r ddau ddegawd diwethaf rwyf wedi gwneud y rhan fwyaf o'm hymchwil ar ffynonellau tonnau disgyrchol a'u canfod, gan arwain at arsylwi tonnau disgyrchol yn uniongyrchol cyntaf ar Fedi 14, 2015. Roedd algorithmau chwilio hidlo cyfatebol a ddyluniwyd gennyf yn y 1990au yn feirniadol wrth ganfod tonnau disgyrchol yn gyntaf ac fe'u defnyddir yn rheolaidd i nodi tonnau disgyrchol o gyfuno tyllau du a binaries seren niwtron. Cynigiais hefyd brofion newydd o theori gyffredinol perthnasedd Einstein a ffurfiodd asgwrn cefn cyfres o bapurau LIGO-Virgo ar y pwnc.
Arolygiaeth
Mae fy ngrŵp ymchwil yn ymwneud â dadansoddi data o synwyryddion tonnau disgyrchol LIGO America ac European Virgo, sy'n ymwneud yn bennaf â chwilio am glymbleidiau gwrthrychau cryno fel sêr niwtron a thyllau duon. Mae fy myfyrwyr a'm postdocs yn gweithio ar ddatgelu arsylwadau tonnau disgyrchiant i gael dealltwriaeth newydd o natur disgyrchiant eithafol a thyllau duon, eiddo mater dwys iawn mewn creiddiau sêr niwtron, natur mater tywyll ac egni tywyll a ffurfio ac esblygiad binaries cryno yn y Bydysawd.
Addysgu
Ar hyn o bryd rwy'n athro ymchwil rhan-amser yn yr Ysgol Ffiseg a Seryddiaeth. O'r herwydd, nid wyf yn dysgu unrhyw gyrsiau graddedig neu israddedig. Yn y gorffennol, rwyf wedi dysgu'r cyrsiau canlynol:

Bywgraffiad
Cefais fy ngradd gyntaf o Brifysgol Bangalore ym 1979, meistri mewn Ffiseg o Sefydliad Technoleg India, Madras, ym 1981 a fy PhD o Sefydliad Gwyddoniaeth India, Bangalore, ym 1987. Cyn symud i Gaerdydd yn 1996, roeddwn yn gymrawd ôl-ddoethurol yn y Ganolfan Ryng-golegol ar gyfer Seryddiaeth ac Astroffiseg (IUCAA), Pune (1989-91) a'r Ganolfan Ryngwladol ar gyfer Ffiseg Ddamcaniaethol, Trieste, Yr Eidal (1991-1992) ac ar gyfadran IUCAA (1993-1995). Dyfarnwyd cadair bersonol i mi gan Brifysgol Caerdydd yn 2003. Ar hyn o bryd fi yw Athro Ffiseg Bert Elsbach ac Athro Seryddiaeth ac Astroffiseg ym Mhrifysgol Talaith Pennsylvania a Chyfarwyddwr Cyswllt y Sefydliad Disgyrchiant a'r Cosmos. Rwy'n parhau i fod yn gysylltiedig â'r Ysgol Ffiseg a Seryddiaeth ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd ac rwy'n aelod o'r Sefydliad Archwilio Disgyrchiant.
Anrhydeddau a dyfarniadau
Rwyf wedi bod yn rhan o'r astudiaeth i ddylunio synhwyrydd tonnau disgyrchiant trydedd genhedlaeth o'r enw Telesgop Tonnau Disgyrchol Einstein (neu ET) sy'n gallu arsylwi clymbleidiau twll du deuaidd ar bellteroedd cosmolegol - chwiliedydd a fydd yn datgelu cyfrinachau'r Bydysawd gan ddefnyddio ffenestr newydd a thrwy hynny gadarnhau neu ddiystyru paradeimau cyfredol mewn cosmoleg fel egni tywyll a mater tywyll. Ar ben hynny, bydd y prosiect hwn yn hanfodol i brofi perthnasedd cyffredinol yn y gyfundrefn gref aflinol y theori, rhywbeth na fydd unrhyw arbrawf system solar neu arsylwi pwlsar deuaidd radio byth yn gallu ei wneud.
Cefais fy nghyfethol gan Bwyllgor Rhyngwladol y Tonnau Disgyrchol (is-bwyllgor Undeb Rhyngwladol Ffiseg Pur a Chymhwysol) i ddatblygu Map Ffordd ar gyfer Seryddiaeth Tonnau Disgyrchol gyda gorwel 30 mlynedd.
