Simon is a marine geochemist who undertook his Ph.D. studies at the University of Leeds under the direction of Dr Harry Elderfield. That work involved the study of shallow burial diagenesis in the SE Pacific in association with mid-ocean ridge processes. Subsequent research interests have continued to concentrate on the sediment-water interface and diagenesis within the immediate top few metres of the sediment record.

This has focussed on two main geographical locations: the North Atlantic within the BOFS / JGOFS deep sea benthic programmes; also the coastal margins from a sediment transport - continent/ocean interactions viewpoint using the Lisbon Canyon system and the NW African margin and Saharan slide as field areas. Secondly the development and subsequent modification of sapropel layers and mud volcanoes found in the Eastern Mediterranean have been investigated as part of the UNESCO/ESF TREDMAR project, linked also to ODP Legs 160 and 161. In all he has participated on 12 deep sea cruises on UK and Russian vessels.

Simon has a strong interest in marine education being a former member of the UK Challenger Society committee and its education sub-committee and a current member of the Geological Society of London Marine Studies Group committee and a consultant to the Open University Oceanography course team. Simon is currently Director of Teaching and Deputy Head of Department.
