Dr Christoph Knöpfel
Educated in the UK, Germany and France I have trained as a composer, musicologist and pianist. I completed undergraduate and Master’s degrees in musicology at City University while concurrently pursuing instrumental studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. This was followed by postgraduate learning in composition at Goldsmiths College, the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt and the Conservatoire de Strasbourg. I hold a doctorate in the philosophy of music from King’s College London and am the recipient of several honours including scholarships from the AHRC and the Paul-Sacher-Stiftung in Basel.
My primary field of expertise lies in 20th and 21st-century music and aesthetics revolving around critical and cultural theory, the function and meaning of compositional technique and the intersection between the textual, the visual and the sonorous in relation to the compositional process and extended performance practices.
