Newyddion: O fis Ionawr 2023 tan fis Ionawr 2025 rwy'n cymryd secondiad mewn diwydiant fel ymgynghorydd profiad defnyddiwr arweiniol yn Emeging Technologies. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn byddaf i ffwrdd o fy nyletswyddau ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd.

Rwy'n Ddarllenydd (Athro Cyswllt) mewn Rhyngweithio Dynol-Gyfrifiadurol (HCI). Rwy'n arwain yr adran ymchwil Seiberddiogelwch, Preifatrwydd a Chyfrifiadureg sy'n Canolbwyntio ar Bobl a grŵp ymchwil Cyfrifiadureg sy'n Canolbwyntio ar Bobl Caerdydd yn yr Ysgol Cyfrifiadureg a Gwybodeg. Mae fy niddordebau ymchwil yn cynnwys rhyngweithio dynol-gyfrifiadurol, cyfrifiadura hollbresennol a dylunio systemau rhyngweithiol i gefnogi hunan-fyfyrio, hunan-fonitro, adborth (sain, haptig, gweledol a soma), perswadio, trochi a llywio. Mae fy ngwaith yn manteisio ar Rhyngrwyd Pethau, gwisgadwy, ffonau clyfar, realiti estynedig a rhith-realiti. Cyfeiriadedd dadansoddol: astudiaethau arbrofol, meddwl dylunio ac ethnograffeg dylunio.

Rwy'n addysgu Meddwl Dylunio a Phrototeipio ar gyfer Profiad Defnyddiwr (CM3116) i fyfyrwyr israddedig 3edd flwyddyn yn yr Ysgol Cyfrifiadureg a Gwybodeg.

Yn ogystal, rwy'n arholwr allanol ym Mhrifysgol Goldsmiths, MSc Peirianneg UX.

Current Projects

I am currenly leading a research with Sports Scientists in Swansea University on 3D modeling and printing of physical activity (PA) in school children. My main responsibility in this project is designing 3D digital models of children's interpretation of PA and government's guideline on PA for this age group. This research is a follow on project, which build on the research findings, experiences and collaborations arising from Modelling Activity using Real-time Sensors (MARS): How long does it take to burn off a MARS bar a British Science Festival runner in 2016. MARS was showcased at British Science Festival (Sept 2016) and it brought Sports Scientists, BioScientists, Computer Scientists and Engineers together Video.

I have been the Co-Investigator (CoI) in an EPSRC funded project CHARM (ref EP/H006966/1). As a leading researcher I and the team developed a smartphone application called bActive, which applied and tested the theory of social feedback in physical activity (PA) behaviour change through a randomised control trial. Such interventions also offer the opportunity for applying control engineering and system identification concepts in behavioral change settings. One approach is using a fluid dynamic model to assess a computational model of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). A semi-physical system identification approach is developed in Arizona State University (ASU) and ESPOL (Equador) for interventions associated with improving PA using a semi-physical parameter estimation procedure where input-output data from an experiment under real-life circumstances must be collected. To gain a deeper insight into the use of social feedback in PA interventions and how this cue could be designed more successfully in bActive and similar apps, I am leading a follow on research on the bActive RCT where the input and output data from the RCT is used to test the prediction ability of the SCT model.

My overarching professional goal is to use innovative technology (including embedded sensors) in applications with large-scale social and human impact.

In summary my research interests are in:

  • Mobile Human-Computer Interaction
  • Dynamic Continuous Interaction
  • Physical Activity
  • Mental health and well being
  • Ubiquitous Interaction
  • Tangible Interaction
  • Sonification

I am always keen to consider supervising novel and interesting proposals for PhD research. If you would like to submit an application you will need to follow the procedure outlined on the University postgraduate research pages. The process requires applicants to identify a potential supervisor as part of their application. Feel free to contact me to discuss supervision, but before you do please consider the following points:

I have a small number of example research projects published online (see here and here), but I prefer potential students to have developed their own research proposal. It is helpful if you identify in advance:

  • The scope of your project (i.e. what are the research questions and problems?)
  • The current state of the art (i.e. summarise the existing literature that has been published on your chosen research topic)
  • Current limitations (i.e. identify the “gaps” in existing literature in relation to the scope of your project)
  • Users (i.e. who are the users (primary, secondary and tertiary) ? )
  • Proposed research methods (i.e. what Human-Computer Interaction methods, frameworks, theories will you use to tackle the current limitations and develop new knowledge?)
  • Anticipated contribution to Computer Science (i.e. what will we know after your PhD that we do not know now?)

There is some flexibility to a PhD research project and ideas will develop over time, but it is useful to begin from a structure as described above.

Please take the time to read my work and read the work I have cited (Publications tab), and develop the scope of your project around similar topics i.e. please ensure that your research proposal is directly related to my research interests (Research tab).
