Ilona is currently a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health at the School of Dentistry in Cardiff University. She is the Deputy Director for Assessment across all taught programmes and the lead for student experience and engagement within the School of Dentistry. Her role involves research, teaching and dental public health consultant practice. Ilona's main research interests involve improving oral health for older adults in hospitals and care settings. She is currently the topic lead for the undergraduate professionalism, law, ethics and communication skills programme in the School of Dentistry. She is also currently the module lead for the Masters in Public Health Dental Public Health Module. She is particularly interested in the application of evidence based practice, professionalism, communication skills and quality. Ilona has been developing video based assessment tools and and electronic learning environments for quality assurance and learning.

Career Profile
Ilona is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health in Cardiff. After graduating from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guys and St Thomas hospitals in 1997, she undertook General Professional Training in the South West of England, working in both practice and hospital. She then entered General Dental Practice in 2000. She was appointed as a Senior Dental Officer in Community Dentistry in 2003 and undertook a 6 month secondment to a generic public health team in 2006. Following the completion of her Masters in Dental Public Health in 2008, she was appointed as a Walport Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Specialist Registrar in Dental Public Health working at Cardiff University and Public Health Wales. During her specialist training, she undertook a number of pieces of work including, pandemic influenza planning, work to develop dental contract pilots in Wales, domiciliary care pathway development and a needs assessment for special care dentistry. She was awarded her Completion of Specialist Training, submitted her PhD thesis and was appointed to her present post in 2013. Her PhD research used mixed methods and explored non-dental healthcare workers$acirc; (i.e. nurses and carers) emotional experiences of caring for the adult mouth. She has developed an interest in working across disciplines to reduce health inequalities and improve health care quality as a result of her research.

Undergraduate
Ilona Johnson is currently the topic lead for the undergraduate professionalism, law, ethics and communication skills programme in the School of Dentistry. She provides lectures, seminars, workshops, small group teaching and elearning across all 5 years of the curriculum.
Ilona is a member of the Dental Public Health Team at Cardiff University and provides Dental Public Health teaching for undergraduates. Teaching responsibilities include:
- Dental contractual arrangements and systems
- Critical appraisal skills
- The roles and responsibilities of the dental team
Ilona supervises final year research projects and is a personal tutor for undergraduate dental students.
Postgraduate
Ilona is currently the module lead for the Masters in Public Health Dental Public Health Module. She provides teaching relating to law, ethics, professionalism, workforce planning, socio-dental indicators, funding of health care systems, resource allocation emergency planning and pandemic influenza for this module. .
Ilona provides teaching for Foundation trainees working in Dental Public Health, and has provided teaching for Special Care Dentistry Masters degree students.
