My research focuses upon the characteristics of shoulder dysfunction and its therapeutic management and as such I am currently an Arthritis Research UK Training Fellow, investigating shoulder prognostic factors. I also lead the Cardiff Interactive Shoulder Movement Alliance (CISMA; www.cisma.org.uk ) $acirc;   an online initiative with members in over 30 countries across 5 continents. The aim of CISMA is to bring together the national and international shoulder community for the benefit of patients. This involves collaboration on research, development of educational material and the dissemination of clinical resources.

Notable achievements

In September 2011 I was awarded a  £169,600 fellowship by Arthritis Research UK to undertake a 3 year PhD study looking at prognostic indicators in shoulder rehabilitation; commencing January 2012 ( http://www.arthritisresearchuk.org/research/grant-tracker-items/2012/how-can-we-predict-which-patients-with-shoulder-pain-will-successfully-recover.aspx )

In late 2011 the CISMA Sapulothoracic Assessment System (SAS) was launched. The CISMA SAS is a clinical system for assessing, recording and communicating scapulothoracic movement in an easy, consistent and useful manner. It provides a standardised language and approach for clinical research and for integrating evidence$acirc;  based practice into clinical assessment. In addition there is an educational component regarding fundamental scapulothoracic kinematics and current evidence as to what is pathologically relevant.   The CISMA SAS can be downloaded from the CISMA website, alongside streamed educational videos that explain its use and multi-angle video footage of shoulder patients to illustrate its clinical application.

In 2010 the Cardiff Interactive Shoulder Movement Alliance was launched with an online questionnaire looking at current practice in scapulothoracic assessment.

In 2008 I was awarded a grant of  £9,000 by rcbcwales (Research Capacity Building Collaboration Wales) under their First into Research grant scheme to undertake a research project entitled $acirc;  Scapulohumeral assessment in the clinical setting: the development of a robust measurement tool$acirc;  . This was a multi-centre, clinical project involving collaboration between Cardiff University and NHS Physiotherapy Departments in the Cardiff & Vale University Health Board and the Aneurin Bevan Health Board.

In 2007 I was awarded the DonJoy British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) Allied Health Professionals Fellowship which I used to visit UK experts in the field of shoulder care in order to identify themes of shoulder research.

In 2007 I successfully completed module 1 of the Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning (PCUTL) and achieved Fellowship status of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

In 2006 I was awarded the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) Researcher Prize for Clinical Excellence for a paper on the subject of scapular rotator muscle imbalance.

I am a member of the CSP (Chartered Society of Physiotherapists), BESS (British Elbow and Shoulder Society), EUSSER (European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Rehabilitation) and a Fellow of the HEA (Higher Education Academy)

As a lecturer in Physiotherapy I teach across all 3 levels of our undergraduate course. This includes generic areas such as anatomy and my specialist professional practice area of musculoskeletal outpatients. My active research interest in shoulder dysfunction and its therapeutic management provides a basis for my supervising of both undergraduate and postgraduate student research, my own research output and my postgraduate teaching activities.
