Dr Diane Gardner

Senior Lecturer - Teaching and Research

Yr Ysgol Peirianneg

Trosolwyg

Diane studied for an MEng in Civil Engineering with Spanish at Cardiff University, achieving first class honours. During this time she spent one year at the Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, studying Civil Engineering and participating in a number of research projects. She remained at Cardiff University for her postgraduate studies, carrying out a PhD in the field of the durability of cementitious materials under the supervision of Prof. B.I.G. Barr and Prof. R. Lark. Her work comprised Experimental and Numerical Studies of the Permeability of Concrete, whereby she addressed through an extensive laboratory investigation the influence of moisture on permeability with a view to reducing the time taken to perform a permeability test. This was complimented by a numerical model which simulated the experimental arrangement. After finishing her PhD Diane worked for Hyder Consulting for 3 years. Her main role was as a bridge engineer, although she was involved in a number of tower foundation and tunnel designs as well as the refurbishment design of several underground stations. Her experience of bridge rehabilitation schemes renewed her interest in the durability of concrete structures and she returned to Cardiff University in 2009 as a Lecturer in Civil Engineering. Diane is a member of the BRE Institute of Sustainable Engineering in the Cardiff School of Engineering. She works closely with colleagues on the development of Cementitious, Self Healing Intelligent Construction Materials that have the benefit of greater longevity with reduced impact on the environment. In Summary, Diane has expertise in: - Durability of cementitous materials - Structural Design - Numerical Modelling of flow processes - Self Healing Cementitious Materials Architectural, Civil & Environmental Engineering
