Background
Dental prescribing accounts for 9% of all primary care antibiotic prescriptions in Wales. Clinical guidelines recommend that antibiotics should only be used in the treatment of dental problems where there is evidence of spreading infection, and only then in conjunction with operative measures. There is some evidence to suggest antibiotics are being used in the treatment of dental problems in situations where they may not be indicated. However, little is known about how antibiotics are being used on a day-to-day basis to treat dental problems by primary care practitioners.
Aims
- To asses of the effectiveness of systemic antibiotics in the treatment of symptomatic apical periodontitis and acute apical abscess in adults.
- To describe the uses of therapeutic antibiotics for the treatment of dental problems by general dental practitioners (GDPs) and general medical practitioners (GMPs).
- To understand the influences on antibiotic prescribing behaviours of GDPs and GMPs for dental problems.
Current Projects
- Cochrane Systematic Review entitled ‘Systemic antibiotics for symptomatic apical periodontitis and acute apical abscess in adults’, conducted in conjunction with Support Unit for Research Evidence (SURE), Cardiff University.
- APICAL (Antibiotics and Primary Care Dental Problems) – a three phase, mixed methods study being conducted in Wales involving GDPs and GMPs.
