Dr Jamie Read is Dean of Medical Education and Director of the Centre for Medical Education at Cardiff University School of Medicine. His clinical background is as a Geriatrician and he is currently an Honorary Specialist Geriatrician at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. He also holds a clinical role at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.
My education interests are in ensuring excellent student experience for the best possible patient care. I believe that we should be preparing our future graduates to be compassionate and caring healthcare professionals, skilled at working with teams of multi-disciplinary individuals. In particular this means ensuring that our students are excellent communicators, empathetic individuals and able to learn life-long to keep their skills up to date.
My research interests are in the way that students develop their professional identities, supported by my PhD which is investigating how students develop professional identities in the context of academic failure.
I hold national roles with the Academy of Medical Educators and the Royal College of Physicians and have given invited talks and workshops on education leadership and research across the world.
