Trosolwyg

I joined Cardiff School of Law & Politics in January 2020. I was previously a lecturer in law at the University of Huddersfield. I received education in both the UK and China. I completed my PhD in law without correction at Bangor University in 2017. I was awarded LLM in International Business Law by the University of Manchester in 2008 and LLB by Qingdao University (China) in 2005.

My general research interests lie in international trade law and maritime law, with focuses on international carriage of goods by sea and international sales law. My PhD thesis examines four crucial issues regarding the transfer of rights through the bill of lading in maritime trade, viz., the transfer of contractual right to sue, the transfer of proprietary interests in goods, the transfer of the right of control, and the legal and policy reasons for the transfer of rights in question. It adopts a law and economic perspective, comparatively analysing how these issues have been settled in English law, American Law and the Rotterdam Rules and exploring how these issues should be regulated under Chinese law.

Before starting my academic career, I was a commercial lawyer practising in China. I used to work in the legal departments of Haier Group and China COSCO Shipping, dealing with legal affairs concerning international trade, shipping and corporate governance.

My current research focuses on the harmonisation and modernisation of the law on the legal functions of transport documents in maritime trade. It adopts a holistic perspective, examining the functions of transport documents and their electronic equivalence in a broad context that integrates shipping with trading in its entirety, aiming to identify how the law in this area will evolve and uncover the interplay between the law, policy and disruptive technology.

I am also interested in China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, particularly its impact on the development of the law regarding international sales and cargo transportation.
