John Paul Wells is a registrar in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and an Honorary Clinical Teacher in Cardiff University. He completed both his primary dental and medical degrees in Cardiff University.  His research interest is in Trauma Surgery and he has been involved with the Violence Research Group since 2008.  He has contributed to the research of the National Violence Surveillance Network (NVSN) of 117 EDs in England and Wales which has provided annual reports on trends in violence-related harm since 2000. This work has been published in leading criminology, public health and economics journals. He is currently researching an MSc considering the use of ED data in violence prevention and the impact of the Emergency Care Dataset on the routined collection and sharing of data.

He has also has an interest in clinical IT and has designed and introduced database systems in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. These systems have been used by all NHS Trusts in South Wales since 2010 and benefitted more than 100,000 patients with improved communication and flow of information between providers.
