Nicolás' research portfolio covers the design, fabrication and characterization of integrated optoelectronic devices and systems in III-V, silicon, and silicon nitride platforms for telecommunications and aerospace applications. Research applications include next generation fiber optical interconnects and networks. His work has been performed in close collaboration with international companies and research centers including: CEA-Leti, Ciena, National Optics Institute, Lumentum, and Western Digital; and academia and institutes including: Carnot Institute, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, McGill University, Paris-Sud 11 University, and Trinity College Dublin.

Nicolás is currently a work package leader on the EPSRC Future Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub working in close collaboration with Airbus, IQE, Sheffield University, and University College London.

Nicolás Abadía received a Telecommunications Engineering degree from the Technical University of Madrid and Royal Institute of Technology. He did a joint M.Sc in Photonics at Ghent University, Royal Institute of Technology, and Free University of Brussels. Dr. Abadía received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Paris-Sud working in collaboration with CEA-Leti. After that, he was a joint postdoctoral fellow at Trinity College Dublin and McGill University, during which, he worked on III-V and silicon photonics devices and systems in collaboration with Ciena, Lumentum and Western Digital.

Dr. Abadía is currently a lecturer at Cardiff University and the Institute for Compound Semiconductors with research interests including integrated optoelectronic devices and systems in III-V, silicon, and silicon nitride platforms for telecommunication and aerospace applications.

Nicolás is currently a work package leader on the EPSRC Future Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub working in close collaboration with Airbus, IQE, Sheffield University, and University College London.

He has received a number of international recognitions including the 2016 OSA Outstanding Reviewer Recognition, the SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship, and the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship; as well as national recognitions such as the Dr. César Milstein Grant and the best thesis award by the Official College of Telecommunication Engineers and the Spanish Association of Telecommunication Engineers.
