2013-2015: Understanding the relative valuations of research impact: Applying best-worst scaling experiments to survey the public & biomedical/health researchers

This study aims to address this gap by refining and adapting a survey-based approach known as Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) to analyse the relative valuations of research impact as perceived by the general population and researchers. This study will focus on biomedical and health research and will contribute to the MRC's objective to fund studies that 'Deliver user/beneficiary views on the contribution of academic research and MRC input to this'.

2013 - 2015: Financing Local Public Transport using Land Value Capture Tax : The Case of Cardiff Bus.
Funded by British Academy/Leverlulme Small Research Grant (Ref: SG122122).

Total: £6,947.
This project is a scoping study to examine a potential policy option of levying land value capture property tax to fund local public transport in the UK. Traditional charging scheme only recognises the internal use value of transport facility. What is overlooked is that the public transport system often promotes and, in economic terms, exerts positive externalities upon the market values of real estate properties which are adjacent to the transport network. Such added property values, if recovered through taxation, can be used to finance local public transport systems, which, given the current economic climate, are typically short of funding in the contemporary UK. The geographic focus of this study will be on the public bus system in the city of Cardiff, Wales.

2012 - 2014: Public Perception of security and privacy: Assessing Knowledge, Collecting Evidence, Translating Research into Action.

Security technologies and related measures are implemented to mitigate likely risks from terrorist attacks and other threats, but these technologies and measures may compete with privacy and civil liberties. RAND Europe is participating in PACT, a 3-year EU-funded research project to assess existing knowledge about the relation between security and privacy; collect empirical evidence through a pan-European survey; and analyse the main factors that affect how the public perceives the security and privacy implications of security technology. RAND Europe is leading the design and analysis of a large-scale survey that is aimed to collect responses from 27,000 participants across the EU27 member states using face-to-face interviews and internet surveys. The survey questionnaire involves asking participants' preferences in three real-life situations where different factors related to privacy and security may compete.
