I work on novel optoelectronic and integrated photonic devices/systems based on nanophotonic approaches of plasmonic metamaterials, Silicon/III-V semiconductor photonic crystals, and photonic topological Insulators. I worked closely with industry and academia with applications ranging from high capacity/speed telecommunications, laser photonics, ultrasensitive chemical/medical biosensing, solar engery, 3D metrology to high efficiency infrared light sources/detectors etc. My current research focuses on Photonic Topological Insulator lasers based on III-V nanowires utilizing selective area epitaxy.
My expertise includes 2D/3D optical design, nanofabrication and devices characterization etc. I have several patents and have published >50 journal papers with H-index of >20 and number of citations of >1900.
I obtained a BSc in Physics from National University of Defence Technology and a PhD in Optics from Chinese Academic of Science. Before I joined in the Institute of Compound Semiconductor at Cardiff University, I worked at Wireless & Optoelectronic Research & Innovation Centre at University of South Wales as a postdoc and lecturer.
I have successfully delivered several new concepts/patents for photonic devices. I worked on a Carbon Trust project on highly efficient nanophotonic OLEDs and then a A4B project on novel optical wavelength conversion based on silicon/III-V semiconductor nanowaveguides. During 2013-2015 I worked on Airbus funded project of UAV Laser communications and an EPSRC project of Large Volume Dimensional Metrology. In 2017, I secured a grant for development of highly efficent metamaterials infrared heating as PI.
