Dr Jason Gillespie
I am a medicinal chemist for the Medicines Discovery Institute at Cardiff University. Amongst other responsibilities my role involves contributing towards the advancement of exisiting projects and as part of a team which evaluates and launchs projects for new clinical targets within the field of neuroscience.
I have an MChem(with Honours) in Chemistry from the Heriot-Watt University and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from The University of St Andrews, under the supervision of Prof. Paul Kamer.
My PhD subject area was rational ligand design and asymmetric catalysis where I developed new chiral bidentate phosphorus ligands designed to impart stereochemical control in homgeneous catalytic reactions. Following my PhD I spent a further year in the same field in academia before transitioning into industry where I worked for Johnson-Matthey in the field of catalytic process development. However wishing to pursue a career in drug discovery I moved to work in the pharmaceutical sector, where I worked for a CDMO pharmaceutical company based in the North East of England. After 2.5 years working in late stage GMP drug development and manufacturing I joined the Sussex Drug Discovery Centre as a synthetic/medicinal chemist working in the field of neuroscience. I now contribute to the success of the Medicines Discovery Institute at Cardiff University as a member of the early neuroscience team; an opportunity that is allowing me to broaden my experience across many neurological targets.
I am a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) and a member of The Society for Medicines Research.
