Deputy Managing Director and Group Editorial Director, BBC Magazines

Joined BBC Magazines in August 1988 from The Times, where he was features editor, as eleventh editor of Radio Times. Became editorial director of BBC Magazines in 1991. BSME Editor of the Year, 1993; PPA Editor of the Year, 1996.

In 1996 became publishing director of RT and in the BBC Worldwide reorganisation a year later became director of one of the new cross-media businesses, encompassing magazines such as Radio Times, Wildlife and Music, the BBC’s audio business, and books and video publishing for the Music, Drama, Arts and History genres. And it was in this role that he launched History Magazine in 2000.

Became deputy managing director of BBC Magazines in August 2001 when magazines were brought back together into one division and in January 2006 he took on the additional responsibility of group editorial director for BBC Magazines in London, Bristol and Mumbai.

He takes a keen interest in training and development and is chairman of the Periodicals Training Council. He is Visiting Professor of Journalism at Cardiff University and a member of World Wildlife Fund UK’s Finance and Business Board. In November 2006 he received the BSME’s lifetime achievement award – The Mark Boxer Award - for his outstanding editorial contribution to magazines in this country. In July 2007 he was honoured with the PPA’s Chairman’s Award for his services to training of and development in the UK magazines industry.

He is married with two daughters and divides his time between north London and Gloucestershire. His hobbies are following Arsenal, birdwatching and carpentry.
