Diddordebau ymchwil

My main interests are seismic hazard, disaster response, and risk perception. I am fascinated by human responses to hazards, both in terms of the perceived risk, and post-event. I have learned to operate a UAV and believe they offer a new approach to data collection.

Development, deformation style, and seismic hazard of large normal faults

I study the development and deformation of large continental border faults on the East African Rift System (EARS), an area with small spreading rates and large seismogenic thickness for earthquake nucleation (30 km). Previous evidence points towards large magnitude events on the EARS; however, no such events have been recorded in the short, incomplete earthquake catalogue. My multi-disciplinary research aims to analyse the border fault systems using a range of structural field techniques, as well as various remote sensing methods, such as ‘Structure from Motion’ photogrammetry by using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). After gaining a better understanding as to why these border faults behave in the way they do, I will attempt to develop a new seismic hazard assessment for the region.
