PhD in Language and Communication Research at Cardiff University (2012-present)

MA in Applied Linguistics at Cardiff University (2011-2012)

BA in English studies at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest (2008-2011) (First Class Honours)

I first became interested in linguistics and discourse analysis in particular during my BA degree. I concluded this degree programme successfully by writing a dissertation titled 'A Comparison of Analytical Approaches to Discourse'. I pursued this interest by taking optional modules on sociolinguistics and qualitative research methods during my MA course. I also completed the Research Experience course in my own free time working on pauses in an SFL framework under the supervision of Dr. Lise Fontaine and Dr. Michelle Aldridge-Waddon. My MA dissertation titled 'Openings of Skype and phone calls for the purpose of maintaining personal relationships: A comparative study' doubled as a pilot study for my PhD project. I am currently studying part-time to allow me to work part-time so that I can fund my studies. Throughout my years at university I have always been involved in student representation at various levels and I am currently the representative for part-time PhD students in Language and Communication Research.

Affordances and constraints of the medium in digital video-mediated conversations

My PhD is focused on the affordances of the medium of videochat. I am exploring this topic by analyzing a collection of recorded videochat interactions (including naturally occurring and elicited interactions) as well as interviews with videochat users. I am using a range of methods including multimodal analysis, conversation analysis, nexus analysis, content analysis, and narrative analysis.
