My research focuses on gaining a better understanding of how climate and the environment might have affected the evolution/behaviour and technological development of Homo sapiens during the Middle Stone Age in the Southern Cape. In order to examine the potential influence of climate and environmental changes we need detailed and physically consistent climate and environmental reconstructions for the southern Cape during periods of early human habitation, achievable through using 87Sr/86Sr and εNd signatures of lithogenic fractions of terrigenous detritus from marine sediment cores to infer provenance, transport pattern and continental weathering states.

Research Project: Provenance of Southern Cape Rivers: links to African Hydroclimate and Early Humans

Research Interests:

  • Palaeoceanography

  • Palaeoclimate

  • Geochemistry

  • Physical Oceanography

My PhD is funded by NERC as part of the GW4+ DTP.
