What we perceive is not exclusively determined by incoming sensory signals, but is also shaped by what we already know about the world – i.e. expectations, experience, and knowledge (so-called ‘priors’). My research project is carried out within the framework of Bayesian modelling of perception. By combining psychophysical and computational modelling methods, my project investigates how priors affect cross-modal perception.

More specifically, my PhD research project asks these questions:

  1. Can the same prior be applied across vision and audition? Or, alternatively, does each modality learn and use its own prior in isolation?
  2. If a prior is learned in one modality, can it be transferred to the other modality? If yes, how?
  3. Do people’s proneness to psychosis and autistic traits affect how priors are generalised across modalities? In a more general sense, how can individual differences be accounted for?
