Why does the hunger-poverty cycle persist in fishing communities? A case study in Colombia.
Wayúu are the principal ethnic group in the northeast of Colombia and for some communities inside this group, fishery is an important activity. There, men are in care of fishing, and women are responsible for dividing the production between family consumption and trade, and they are also in charge of money administration, which is mainly used to buy staple foods.
Despite the fact that these conditions exist in the territory, hunger and poverty not only persist, but also present the worst values when compared to the whole country. This suggests that access to food is not enough to achieve food security (and thus reduce poverty), and so there is need to consider other elements such as availability and access to natural resources, external factors, population dynamics and even religious aspects to create programs that effectively help to achieve a food security status.
The present PhD proposal will evaluate and describe social, cultural and environmental characteristics that impede breaking the poverty-hunger cycle in La Guajira and will generate recommendations and future actions to policy makers in order to achieve food security and reduce poverty in La Guajira.
