I completed my BA in English Literature at Cambridge University, and my MSt in English (1780-1900) at Oxford University. I am currently in the third year of an AHRC-funded PhD, co-supervised by Professor Holly Furneaux at Cardiff University, and Professor Daisy Hay at Exeter University. Provisionally titled ‘The Lives of Charles Dickens: A Metabiography 1870-present’, my thesis investigates the origins and development of Dickens biographies. My research has been enriched by two AHRC-funded placements working with the major Dickens collections at the Huntington Library, and the Charles Dickens Museum, including curatorial research towards the Dickens Museum’s winter exhibition 2018-19.

My essay 'Restless Dickens: A Victorian Life in Motion, 1872-1927' won the 2018 Journal of Victorian Culture Graduate Essay Prize, and is forthcoming in the journal.

I was co-organiser of the BAVS Careers Day 2018, which offered careers training specifically tailored to Victorianist PGRs from across the UK. In 2019 I am co-organiser of Dickens Day, the UK's leading annual Dickens studies conference, with the theme of 'Dickens and Bodies'.

My thesis investigates the genesis and evolution of Charles Dickens biographies, from the foundational account by his close friend and appointed biographer John Forster, to the flourishing of biographical activity around his bicentenary in 2012, and after. In addition to Dickens, and life-writing, my research interests include Victorian material and visual culture, Victorian classical reception, masculinities, the history of sexuality, late Victorian into modern, and the writings of Charlotte Brontë and Henry James.

In July 2019 I achieved Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) status, with a distinction on my portfolio. I have acted as seminar tutor on the following undergraduate modules:

  • 'Authoring the Self: Romantics and Victorians' - Autumn 2017
  • 'Star Cross'd Lovers: The Politics of Desire' - Spring 2018 and Autumn 2018
  • 'Ways of Reading' (an introduction to critical theory) - Spring 2019
