I am a postgraduate researcher funded by the South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (SWW DTP). My research examines the relationship between soils, science and literary realism in Victorian Britain. As part of the SWW DTP joint supervision programme, I am supervised by Professor Martin Willis at Cardiff and Professor Ralph Pite at Bristol.

Conceptualisations of Environment and The Victorian Realist Novel

My current research project considers the Victorian exploration of soils. I am particularly interested in the relationship between the burgeoning agricultural science of the period and the emerging realist novel. Linking these two bodies of writing through the popular press, I aim to assess the development of ecological thought in Victorian Britain.
