Meet Kate Sunderland

Katie Sunderland CPD

What does your role involve?

My main role is to support Colleges and Schools across the University in the development and delivery of flexible CPD offerings to industry and organisations – from short courses through to standalone postgraduate modules. Through CPD, academics can disseminate their research and expertise into the business community and create a positive impact.

I work mainly with staff in the College of Physical Sciences & Engineering. Recent activity delivered by the College includes a one-day short course in gas turbine technology, a half-day workshop in additive layer manufacturing techniques and a two-hour research overview of developments within high frequency engineering. This means of engaging with industry can open up wider opportunities for the University, for example collaborative research projects and student placements.

Tell us a bit more about your career history

I am a music graduate of Cardiff University but have taken a completely different career path! After graduating I worked in the Learning & Development Team at the Welsh Government and subsequently spent eight years working for a private sector training company. It’s great to now be working in higher education, where I can apply my experience to a different working environment and continue on my own pathway of development.

Where are we most likely to find you outside of work?

Practising some dance moves (ballet and ballroom), rehearsing for my next amateur dramatics show or cosying up with a good film.

What makes Cardiff University distinctive?

The fact that the University seeks innovation and looks ahead to the future. It’s an interesting and exciting place to work.
