Meet new researcher Malin Bäckman

Malin Bäckman

New member of staff Malin, joined the Sustainable Places team in April, working as an Early Career Researcher on the SUSPLACE Project.

Malin holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design from University of Lapland and graduated from Alto University in Helsinki, Finland in 2013 having completed her Masters in Creative Sustainability at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

Malin joins the Sustainable Places Research Institute from the Sustainable Design Research group NODUS at Aalto University, where she worked as a research assistant for the European research project SHIFT- Support Systems for Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Transformation.

She was previously employed as a Research and Project Assistant at Aalto University during her Master's degree, where she focused on issues related to sustainable development in a local urban context and looked at how collaboration among local actors can foster more sustainable ways of living.

Within the SUSPLACE project Malin’s research topic is Connected Learning Spaces, this research will focus on Education for Sustainability in higher education, more specifically on community-engaged real-world learning approaches. The aim is to increase understanding of how to create learning spaces for sustainability, where university students and local communities engage in mutual learning processes.
