Violence as emotional dominance

The role of emotional dominance in violent situations and how to respond to confrontations is the subject of keynote lecture at the University.

Randall Collins, Dorothy Swaine Thomas Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania will give the next of Cardiff's Distinguished Lectures, hosted by the School of Social Sciences.

According to Professor Collins, emotional dominance of one's opponent is the key to what happens in violence-threatening situations. In his lecture he will consider what causes emotional dominance, looking at different types of situations such as prolonged struggles and stalemates, as well as the sequence of events and emotional expressions of those involved. Practical advice for dealing with violent situations will also be suggested.

Violence as emotional dominance: Micro-sociological causes takes place on Thursday 26^th September in the Birt Acres Lecture Theatre, Bute Building. The Distinguished Lecture Series brings eminent and influential guest speakers to Cardiff University and a wider audience to showcase their work. Previous speakers include translator, playwright, novelist and poet Adam Thorpe; leading cultural historian Professor Robert Darnton; and Jon Crowcroft, Marconi Professor of Communications Systems in the Computer Laboratory at the University of Cambridge.
