A new course in Obstetrics has been added to the Critical Care online CPD programme

We are delighted that the School of Medicine has added a new session to its suite of critical care courses, with bookings now open!
Care of the Critically Ill Obstetric Patient
Caring for this patient group is complex and incidences are increasing, with a recent study identifying that 10% of pregnant women needed level 3 critical care during the first wave COVID-19. In addition, in October 2021 the NHS identified 20% of Critical Care COVID-19 admissions as unvaccinated pregnant women.
This new course aims to support any healthcare professional who cares for complex or acute and critically ill obstetric patients; including medical obstetrician and anaesthetic trainees, GPs, nurses, midwifes and prehospital professionals.
What you’ll learn
You will learn about the identification, management and care of the obstetric women who becomes acutely unwell during pregnancy, labour or the postnatal period. You will have the opportunity to learn about the management of specialist conditions that necessitate admission to critical care for this complex group of patients - including pre-eclampsia, placental abruption, thromboembolism and AFE, haemorrhage, pre-existing maternal disease, oxygen delivery and monitoring, and obstetric sepsis.
The Obstetrics course will join the existing programme of courses covering Rehabilitation Of The Critically Ill, Sepsis and Organ Donation. All the courses are suitable for healthcare professionals working in critical care. These are self-directed learning courses, each comprising 7-10 hours of self-directed study. Content will be available all week for you to work through at your own pace and each course will include a live element by the Critical Care team.
Each session is being offered at the introductory rate of just £50 each (with a 10% discount available if you book two or more courses).

Rehabilitation of the critically ill
This course is an introduction to caring for patients who have been critically ill.
Study hours: 7 to 10 hours, self-directed study. Course materials will be available for the week so that you can work through it in your own time.

Introduction to organ donation
This course is an introduction to organ donation and includes topics such as consent, legal and ethical frameworks, and best practice.
Study hours: 7 to 10 hours, self-directed study. Course materials will be available for the week so that you can work through it in your own time.
Dates: 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 October 2022

Introduction to sepsis
This course explores sepsis, including signs and symptoms, screening, and guidelines for management.
Study hours: 7 to 10 hours, self-directed study. Course materials will be available for the week so that you can work through it in your own time.
