‘Innovation for all’ funding to support the translation of research findings into impact

27 Medi 2021

Four exciting innovation projects related to work in the Biomechanics and Bioengineering Research Centre Versus Arthritis have been awarded funding from the Cardiff University Innovation for All scheme, which is supported by Research Wales Innovation Funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales.

These projects are focused on impact, translation, public engagement, and civic mission, and will drive a step-change in innovation and translational activity. They all strive to move advanced research findings towards greater benefit for individuals living with osteoarthritis.

Dr. Polina Prokopovich leads a project that will evaluate the quality of life data in patients with osteoarthritis with aims to improve drug efficacy in osteoarthritis for the new nanoplex-based treatment for osteoarthritis. This information will be used to determine the cost-effectiveness of the technology prior to commercialisation.

Professor Debbie Mason is working with clinical veterinarian Joel Alves and an international Clinical Research Organisation to conduct market research and analysis of commercial options, to progress a class of drugs called glutamate receptor antagonists, towards treating osteoarthritis in dogs. This approach is intended to not only benefit veterinary orthopedics but also speed up translation to human osteoarthritis.

Dr Liba Sheeran leads a project to take BACK-on-LINETM, a personalised digital health program designed to enhance work-related back pain management, towards a greater impact on the health and productivity of transport and construction workers nationally and internationally. This project builds on previous research and established collaboration with the transport sector to scale up and broaden the reach of this novel, digital health program; helping workers with occupational back pain access personalised self-management to remain functional and in work.

Dr Kate Button leads a project that will develop a self-management treatment for older adults with osteoarthritis and multi-morbidities. This will involve the creation of a workbook and healthcare professional training and will be performed in collaboration with Bridges Enterprise and NHS Wales.
