Dr Kay Swinburne, MEP, strongly encouraged delegates at the Smart Specialization and Horizon 2020 workshop to take full advantage of the major funding opportunities available through the EU’s €80 billion Horizon 2020 programme of Research and Innovation funding.

Dr Swinburne chaired the afternoon session at the recent Smart Specialization and Horizon 2020 workshop at Cardiff’s SWALEC Stadium on 28th April 2014, at which she addressed an audience of academics, industry representatives and policy-makers.

During her address, Dr Swinburne also highlighted the £27m Advanced Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies (ASTUTE) project, a consortium of eight Welsh universities part funded through the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) from EU Structural Funds as the sort of activity that should be supported and extended as a Flagship programme.

ASTUTE aims to work with manufacturing firms across the Wales Convergence Region, enabling such firms to access specialist expertise and facilities through their involvement in collaborative R&D projects with academic partners.

A press release summarizing Dr Swinburne’s comments is available on the Welsh Conservatives website.
