Oral Microbiology & Immunology Goup Award for PhD student

Congratulations to Daniel Morse, a PhD student within our School of Dentistry, who was awarded first place at the Oral Microbiology and Immunology Group (OMIG) Scientific Meeting, held at Gregynog Hall in March 2014. 

Daniel, whose research is funded by an EPSRC-GSK case award and investigates the interaction between bacteria and Candida within biofilms associated with chronic erythematous candidosis.

Speaking about his award, Daniel states "to me personally, it means a great deal. Confidence in my own ability has always been a big hurdle, and I feel that it is important to receive acknowledgement of my skills and knowledge. As part of the PhD journey, it also means a lot. Winning prizes for presentations looks great for future prospective employers; whether academic or industrial. It shows that the work was of a high enough standard, and the presentation clear and good enough to warrant an award – which is great for personal confidence!"

Since winning this poster prize, Daniel has achieved further success, winning second place in a Poster prize at the final MITReG meeting in Cardiff, and by being given the opportunity to deliver an oral presentation in the Candida session at the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) conference in Boston, MA, USA.

As for what’s next, Daniel says he is "hoping to stay in Cardiff and complete a post-doctoral position, with the ultimate goal of continuing to progress in the research area and to gain a lectureship. I know this will be a great challenge, but I feel hard work and motivation will be worthwhile!"
