Astudio o bell ar gyfer myfyrwyr a addysgir yn 2021/22

We are changing the way remote study will be made available for 2021/22, to support students who may still be facing coronavirus (COVID-19) related challenges this academic year.

Due to updated Welsh Government guidance, we are able to deliver much more in-person teaching on campus in 2021/22 than in 2020/21.

We look forward to welcoming all students back to campus at the start of the academic year. However, we realise that there will be periods where some students may need to study remotely for short periods of time. These will include students who are:

  • required to self-isolate due to COVID-19
  • temporarily unable to travel to the UK due to travel restrictions or issues
  • in quarantine in UK accommodation.

If you fall into one of these categories and need to study remotely, you can notify your School by completing the corresponding SIMS task. For 2021/22, remote study has been separated into 3 distinct categories on SIMS:

  • self-isolation
  • delayed arrival
  • extended remote study.

Each category is described in detail below.

If you are required to self-isolate, you will be permitted to study remotely for the duration of the period of isolation only. This is available to all students on all programmes. You can notify your School that you need to self-isolate by completing the ‘self-isolation’ task on SIMS. You will receive an email confirming your request.

You will be supported by your academic School throughout this period, and will be able to access available online materials. However, you will miss some in-person teaching.

Your School will provide details on how your learning will continue to be supported during your self-isolation period.

If your arrival at University is delayed due to issues relating to travel, including travel restrictions and requirements to quarantine on arrival in the UK, you may be permitted to delay your start to on-campus activities by up to four weeks.

Most courses will allow you to delay arrival on campus and study online for this four-week period. However, there are a small number of courses where delayed arrival will not be possible.

You can notify your School that you require a delayed arrival by completing the ‘delayed arrival’ task on SIMS, available from 6 September. You must complete SIMS online enrolment before completing the ‘delayed arrival’ task. You should request to delayed arrival before the start of your course. You will receive an email confirming your request.

You will be supported by your academic School throughout this period, and will be able to access available online materials. However, you will miss some in-person teaching. Your School will provide details on how your learning will continue to be supported during the period of delayed arrival.

For standard programmes the four weeks will include enrolment week (w/c 27 September). You will be expected to engage with your on-campus studies by Monday 25 October at the latest.

Some programmes will be able to permit an extended period of remote study for students who are experiencing acute difficulties with international travel.

Extended remote study is typically available for up to the duration of semester one. However, some postgraduate programmes in Architecture can only permit extended remote study until November.

You can notify your School that you require a period of extended remote study by completing the ‘extended remote study’ task on SIMS, available from 6 September.

Please note, the SIMS task will only appear if your programme is able to permit extended remote study and you must complete SIMS online enrolment before applying for extended remote study.

When completing the task, you will need to inform us of the date that you expect to be able to begin on-campus studies. This will need to include any quarantine period you may have to undertake.

Please note, students approved for extended remote study will receive a comparable student experience accessing learning materials online. Your academic work will be assessed on the same basis as all other students, whether they are studying remotely or not. As long as you have enrolled, you will still be able to access the online learning material offered as part of your programme.

Enrolment

Even if you are applying to study remotely, you should still complete your online enrolment as soon as you receive an email inviting you to do so (you may have already received this email).

Your student ID card

Please note that if you request to study remotely, you will not initially need to collect your student card, or, if you are an international student, provide evidence of your right to study in the UK. We will require you to upload a copy of your passport to the SIMS portal following completion of online enrolment, to verify your identity.

When you arrive at the University you will need to collect your student ID card and provide your full documentation at the ID Card collection event.

Things to consider before you apply for extended remote study

Will your sponsor continue to provide financial support if you study remotely?
If you are receiving financial support from a sponsor to fund your studies you should contact them to check whether they will continue to provide financial assistance if you choose to study remotely.

Do you plan to work in the UK after studying (a post-study work visa)?
The Graduate route opens in summer 2021, when the Home Office guidance will be available. The current rules state that you must arrive in the UK by 6 April 2022 and be engaged in face-to-face study for one semester in the UK, and meet all other criteria, to be eligible to apply for the Graduate route visa after completion of your academic programme.

University accommodation

We can release you from your Residences Agreement in the event of your School approving your request to switch to remote study.

If your application is approved, you will receive an email from your School (via SIMS) and this will be the evidence Residences Managers need to approve the release.

If you studied remotely in semester one and will be returning to campus to complete your learning there are a limited number of vacancies in university accommodation so please check availability.
