Name: Stephanie Bird

Programme: BSc Radiotherapy and Oncology

Graduated: 2014

Where are you today and what are you doing there?

Currently working at The Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. I started in August 2014 as a Band 5 treatment radiographer working on the linear accelerators and had the opportunity of a 6 month rotation working on the superficial treatment unit treating skin cancers, superficial tumours and a condition called Dupuytren’s contracture. Currently, I am on a year secondment as a research radiographer which involves recruiting and looking after patients in radiotherapy clinical trials.

How did your Cardiff University experience help you prepare for your role?

Choosing to study at Cardiff University was one of the best decision I have ever made. Not only did it develop my academic knowledge needed to be a qualified radiographer, it enhanced my life skills too! I got involved as much as I could by being a student rep, vice-president of the Radsoc (the radiography society), volunteering for numerous charities, setting up PALs to support peer assisted learning, playing ladies rugby and even worked at the student union!  The whole experience developed my confidence (especially in public speaking!), time management and showed that hard-work does pay off. The support staff provided was great and I still am still in touch with some to this day.

What do you like most about your job?

The patients! I am lucky enough to meet some of the most extraordinary people I could ever meet. The help and care that you can provide as a radiographer, often during a difficult time, for the patient and their families is a very rewarding opportunity. It makes you appreciate the small things.

What is your next career step?

I am due to finish my research secondment in June 2016 and therefore will have to see what opportunities are around at this time. I am very keen in any opportunity to promote cancer awareness and enjoy ensuring patients' are receiving the best care possible - so maybe something linked to this!

What advice would you give to prospective students thinking about studying your programme?

If you are interested in radiotherapy I would advise you to go visit a department and do as much research as possible. When I left sixth form, I initially went to university to study accounting and finance - I didn't stay for long!  Make sure it is right for you. Radiotherapy has many areas you can specialise in meaning there are a lots of opportunities you can work towards. So if you like science, want to work within a constantly evolving area and have a caring nature - Radiotherapy may be for you!
