The Informal Economy in Post-Conflict Cities

In conflict or crises-affect cities, the informal economy plays a critical role in stabilising urban economies, providing livelihoods for the dispossessed, and supporting replacement urban services. This event explores the dynamics of informal enterprise, its wider economic implications, problems, and contribution to resilience in the aftermath of urban shocks of stress. Comparing cities facing different recovery challenges – from civil war and ethnic conflict to drug and gang-related crime – the event brings together urban experts from Pakistan, Iraq, Colombia, Somaliland and Nepal to explore the trajectories and impact of crises on the informal economy and its capacity for change. Speakers include Dr Saeed Ahmed (Karachi), Prof Sudha Shrestha (Kathmandu), Dr Nesreen Barwari (Dohuk), Eid Ahmed (Hargeisa) and Dr Lina Martinez (Cali) drawing on comparative DFID-ESRC research and UN-Habitat and Commonwealth Local Government Forum partnerships.
