The Business of People: The Significance of Social Science to Industry

Businesses are used to working with Universities around technology driven innovation. As important for organisations adapting to the future is the social element. For instance, how will people choose to spend decreasing disposable income? How might consumers’ ethics influence purchasing choices? Are we giving coders the right questions for AI?

This event will look at how organisations can harness the knowledge and expertise of the disciplines around how people behave. This includes law, business modelling, trade and employer relations, human factors, behavioural change and many more. Speakers from both the University and industry will outline some of the major challenges and areas of opportunity.

Cardiff University is recognised as one of top ten research institutions in UK for social sciences working with a variety of partners on a range of projects. From partnering with global logistics organisation Panalpina to understand supply chain optimisation, to working with private care homes to improve communication between staff and residents.

In recognition of our strength, Cardiff have been awarded funding to support partnerships between businesses and academics looking at projects using social science expertise. We will be running a funding scheme to support partnerships between Cardiff academics, postgraduate students and businesses. We’ll be sharing further information about this and other schemes at the event.

There will be a series of short presentations on the evening by academic staff, businesses and funding support staff offering advice, guidance and first-hand experience. The presentations will be followed by a Q and A session

Networking: There will be an opportunity for networking afterwards over a light supper.
