The Centre of European Law and Governance and the Centre of Law and Society at the School of Law and Politics are pleased to host this lecture by Professor Carl Baudenbacher, President of the EFTA Court

The UK’s vote to leave the European Union in the referendum of 23 June 2016 has not answered the question of the future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union. One of the options floated during the referendum campaign, and since the Leave vote, has been for the UK to join the European Economic Area (EEA).

The EEA extends the EU’s Single Market to three other countries: Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. These countries are simultaneously members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). They are not subject to the jurisdiction of the EU’s Court of Justice, but to that of the EFTA Court. “Through the looking glass: bespoke (?) Brexit solutions” by Professor Carl Baudenbacher, President of the EFTA Court, will explore whether the EEA model, or a bespoke variation of it, would be a suitable way forward for the UK after Brexit.
