Implementing a new Environmental Management System.

Working with ASTUTE, Qualitek Engineering achieved the BS8555 Environment Management standard, improved its bottom line and reduced its energy usage, waste and potential for pollution, leading to an improved company culture.

Qualitek Engineering is a specialist Precision Engineering and Fabrication business with roots stretching back to 1968. Qualitek precision engineering products are used in applications throughout the UK; from energy pipeline joints in the North Sea to bus shelters in West Wales.

Qualitek initially partnered with ASTUTE to access specialist research expertise in product design and innovation, 3D CAD, rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing.

However, as a result of our these initial interactions, it quickly became apparent Qualitek could also benefit from ASTUTE’s specialist support in the phased implementation of an improved Environmental Management Systems provided through ASTUTE’s associated programme of Cross Cutting Themes activities, ultimately helping Qualitek secure BS8555 accreditation.

Developing policy and procedures

With help from the ASTUTE team, as part of our Cross Cutting Themes activities, Qualitek identified one of their own staff to lead the Environmental improvement initiative.

After an initial audit completed by ASTUTE and some coaching, Qualitek engineer Neil Hopkins studied the standard and relevant legislation, then developed a policy with objectives and identified significant environmental aspects.

Procedures to address them were designed and awareness training sessions followed. Performance has been monitored and corrective action introduced to ensure continual improvement.

Benefiting from improvements

There have been two clear winners from this activity, the environment through improved management and obviously Qualitek, who by saving money and focusing on improvements, have also seen the start of a cultural shift towards adding value which they recognise will underpin a sustainable business advantage.

Following their interaction with ASTUTE, achieving the BS8555 Environment Management standard has resulted in Qualitek both improving its bottom line and reducing its energy usage, waste and potential for pollution, leading to an improved company culture.

We initially identified a potential business gain through cost reduction and accreditation as a responsible manufacturer to win more contracts; but have emerged from the process with the bonus of a platform for cultural change. ASTUTE support has been effective and invaluable in this transformation.
