The Logistics and Operations Management (LOM) section is an interdisciplinary group of academics working to address grand challenges relating to Logistics, Operations and Supply Chain Management.
Our section members come from diverse disciplinary backgrounds including mathematics, economics, engineering, geography, law, management and psychology.
We are one of the largest groupings of academic staff in this subject area internationally and we are highly active in terms of research output, postgraduate teaching and research, as well as undergraduate teaching.
Our activities align with and support delivery of the School’s public value strategy which is committed to delivering economic and social value through innovative interdisciplinary research and teaching that addresses the grand challenges facing organisations, management and society.
We engage closely with external organisations, including a range of knowledge transfer partnerships, collaborative funded projects, contribution to executive education, keynotes to industry audiences, and hosting of major practitioner events.
This, along with advice on activities coming from our Advisory Group ensures that our research and teaching is highly relevant and impacts on practice. We have developed an overview of our engagement activities, explaining our work with the media, public outreach, work with government and industry, as well as a range of other ways in which we connect with society and stakeholders.
Through our teaching, we aim to raise and nurture the next generation of logistics and operations management leaders. At postgraduate level, we offer a range of specialist Masters programmes, including our popular MSc Logistics and Operations Management and, from September 2018, the new MSc Sustainable Supply Chain Management. For those with an interest in the maritime industry, the MSc Maritime Policy and Shipping Management course supports those who wish to enhance their careers in international management and policy-making in this critical industry.
At undergraduate level, we contribute to the flagship BSc Business Management programme, offering a specialised route in Logistics and Operations Management as well as modules on the general management route.
We support our teaching with a wide range of company visits, guest speakers, specialist careers events, innovative teaching approaches and inspiring lecturers.
Our research covers a broad range of themes, including operations research, operations management, procurement, supply chain management and logistics. It also incorporates a wide range of approaches, including well established traditions in systems dynamics, lean and operational excellence, as well as transport and shipping.
Since 2014, we have been involved in excess of £3 million of funded research projects, and have published widely in highly ranked ABS journals. During our Annual Section Conference (LOMSAC), we celebrate our collective research and compile a list of the keywords that define our research.

We are also home to a number of research groups and centres, which provide the ideal environment for the development of new ideas and theories as well as the promotion of synergies. These include:
